Israel’s farms are extremely vulnerable and in need of immediate support.
Israeli farmers have weathered hardship for decades. Farming is unpredictable by nature,
dependent on weather, labor, and narrow windows to plant and harvest. Years of drought
and rising costs have tested their resilience again and again. Then came COVID-19,
disrupting workers, supply chains, and day-to-day operations. Before many farms had
fully recovered, October 7th dealt with another devastating blow. Workers disappeared
almost overnight, communities were evacuated, access to fields was restricted, and farms
(especially along Israel’s borders) were exposed to ongoing rocket and drone fire. Each
time farmers begin to recover, another crisis seems to follow.
In the years since, continued military threats from Hezballa and IRGC have extended the
extraordinary burden on farms already stretched thin. Shipping disruptions have driven
costs higher. Fuel, fertilizer, water, equipment, and other essential inputs continue to
climb. Farmers are being asked to produce under conditions that make farming
increasingly difficult to sustain, while mortgages, leases, salaries, and operating
expenses never stop. For many, the question is no longer how to grow their farm. It is
whether they can keep it alive.
The crisis facing the farms is a crisis of food security and border safety for all of Israel, but in most cases, the government has yet to step in with support.
